Live Workshop
Women's Writing Workshop
Sunday afternoon

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Female energy is strong yet vulnerable. Wise, intuitive, and complex, when we connect with our inner selves, we have access to our deepest desires and our truest needs. Unconnected, we can recoil, white knuckle our way through our days, smile when we need to sob, and give in to the obsessive thinking and guilt that can over take us when we turn to darkness.

Female energy is both soft light and shadowy darkness and when we are in balance, our dual aspects can help us be producers of our lives. Balance for women comes from expressing ourselves, from being heard by another, and from forming connections. We often need to talk things out, not to fix or problem solve, but to simply acknowledge and to better be where we are.

When we write, we are dialoguing with that inner self we often times turn from because we are busy with responsibilities that take us away (momentarily) from ourselves. Writing is an easy way to reconnect to the parts that we have to silence or subdued to get through our daily lives.

In this workshop, women are invited to reconnect with their inner selves–with the dreams, desires, and needs we sometimes forget as we move through our days. Hannah will guide you through exercises that will unlock and open the door that, out of necessity, we have to keep closed. She will also teach you how to continue with your writing out of the class and help you stay connected to that inner self, even in the most chaotic of times.

ONLINE WORKSHOP
12-Week Novel Writing Workshop, A Craft Class

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This class is for the writer who has at least several chapters or an outline of a novel and wants to learn the skills required to complete (and/or revise) the manuscript.

Composing a novel demands that the writer not only have good story telling skills but also that those skills can go the distance of 60,000 (give or take) words. All aspects of basic storytelling are covered with a focus on the special issues of consistency and flow that arise when writing a novel. Some of the following topics are covered:

    •    Point of view: Which one is the right one for your book? Is your point of view   consistent throughout?
    •    Dialogue: Making it authentic.
    •    Flow and transition between chapters and scenes.
    •    Use of foreshadow (can help build the suspense needed to keep the reader hooked for the length of your book).
    •    Verb tense: Which is the right one for your story?
    •    Flashbacks (when to use them and when to avoid them).
    •    Plot (writing viable subplots and avoiding plot dumping).
    •    Character development: Does your main character grow from beginning to end?  Do you have some flat characters for contrast? Do you have too many characters?
    •    Writing an outline and knowing when to veer off course from it.
    •    Theme (the emotional pulse that beats throughout the story).
